Training Considerations

At Mobile MOUSe we have been training for quite sometime now (over 20 years) and through time (and huge amounts of experience) have identified a few things that can make or break the effectiveness of a training session... In no particular order here they are...

Good Things

SMALL GROUPS ARE BETTER...
Creating smaller learning groups with similar skill-sets and learning requirements is a real smart move. Generally, not only will you get through more content on the day but the trainer will be able to customise content to the students exact requirements. This will lead to a clearer, sharper more goal-focused learning environment.

BOOK THE APPROPRIATE COURSE...
Ensure your staff are enrolled in the correct course for their current skill-set and/or for their current needs. Placing a basic student on an advanced course does not mean "more advanced content = greater skills gained... therefore more value". A student who does not have the appropriate skill-set or need for the course content in question will go away feeling they have not gained much if anything at all. Get your staff to read the course outline and take one of our free no-obligation skills assessments...

GROUP YOUR STUDENTS...
Group students with similar skill-sets and learning requirements together on the same session. If you have a large array of skill-sets, your training dollar value will increase exponentially if you simply have similar skill-sets grouped together, even if this means having to put on an extra course, you will definately see (and reap) the rewards.

ONE STUDENT PER COMPUTER...
The statement says it all !!! We provide our own laptop computers & equipment for each student (at no extra cost) for the duration of the training at your premises.

HANDS-ON APPROACH...
Choose a training provider that offers the "hands-on" approach to learning. This style of computer learning has been (and will continue to be) the most popular and effective method of computer training as students get to learn-by-doing as well as having the option to ask the instructor questions and learn from other students experiences.

ASK FOR TRAINING REFERENCES...
As the trainer is the focal point and the "group leader" of the session, it is absolutely CRITICAL that the trainer be experienced and HIGHLY skilled in their field. Any reputable training provider will have no problem providing numerous positive student feedbacks about the course or the trainer in question. At Mobile MOUSe we are so proud and confident of our trainers and their skills we can provide thousands of postive feedbacks about our courses and our trainers... THATS A FACT !!!!

POST COURSE SUPPORT...
Choose a training provider that affords students the ability to refine their new found skills by having quality training manuals and exercise files and that also offer free post-course support to students. Of course, we do all of this... and more !!

Bad Things

LARGE GROUPS MEAN MORE SAVINGS.... BUT...
While our price structure is well suited to the idea of saving your organisation money, we do not recommend that you increase classroom numbers in purely for the reason of reducing the price of the training (per head). If students don't have the necassary skill-sets for the content in question, this will almost certainly lower the standard of training for the rest of the group. Rather use the extra per head cost to increase the value and quality of the training for the people that need it and that have the correct skill-sets to begin with.

ADVANCED COURSES ARE ALWAYS MORE BENEFICIAL, RIGHT?...
Don't fall into the trap of booking advanced courses if the student(s) are not up to it. People often make the mistake thinking that an advanced course means more valuable and useful content, unfortunately this is not true if the student(s) are not up to the task. If the candidate(s) do not have the necassary skills to cope with the course content to begin with, the course objectives and content will be completely lost on them and will be of no use. Get your staff to take one of our free no-obligation skills assessments...

A BIT OF THIS... A BIT OF THAT...
Trying to save money by booking a training day and attempting to combine more than one course into a single day is generally a bad idea. E.g. half a day on Microsoft Word and half a day on Excel. There is so much to Microsoft Office for each course level and trying to combine multiple courses into one will always leave attendees feeling that they are missing out (and they are). These types of sessions are never really an effective way to spend your training dollar as more often than not the training will be rushed and students will only get "half the picture". To increase the value of the training, you should be thinking 1 course / course level = 1 day (2 day courses aside).

MISH MASH OF SKILLS...
Avoid (if at all possible) lumping students with drastically different skills-sets together on the same course as the students with lesser skill-sets will always hold-back the students with higher skill-sets from learning more.

MORE THAN ONE STUDENT PER COMPUTER...
We don't recommend trying to place two (or more) people on one computer. Think of it this way... if two people are sitting at one computer, at best, they are only getting 50% of the value in terms of skills gained as most people learn through interaction.

Less than Ideal Things

SEMINAR STYLE TRAINING...
This is probably one of the least effective teaching styles for computer training (especially when trying to cover an entire range of subjects). Students are more often than not disengaged from the session and will come away with very little. After-all... it's meant to be a computer course.

SWAPPING STUDENTS OR STUDENTS ARRIVING HALFWAY...
Swapping one student for another halfway through the day (or only having people attend for certain sections) is often a bad idea. This is because they will have missed key content that is often the groundwork for other concepts or exercises or they would have missed things that relate to (or can affect) the concept or content for which they have come for. This type of training is rarely effective unless an entirely new group arrives (replacing the previous one) for a new session that focuses on specifically requested concepts or content.
